We were founded in 1907.
People’s City Mission provides three meals a day to over 300 men, women and children staying in the emergency shelters and the Curtis Center transitional housing program.
The Homeless Prevention Center provides free food, clothing, household items, furniture, toys, and personal care items to people living at or near the poverty line.
Over 98% of our support comes from private donation.
In the last 5 years, Charity Navigator has awarded us their
4 Star rating. We are in the top 1% of charities in the U.S. for financial efficiency due to 93.2% of donations going directly to meet the needs of our guests.
In 2010, People’s City Mission:
Provided services to 26,771 people in Lincoln/Lancaster County.
Provided 103,468 nights of shelter.
Assisted 1,960 unduplicated guests.
Served over 156,372 meals.
Gave away 1,054,798 lbs of food through the Homeless Prevention Center.
Served 6,363 patients through our Free Clinic by providing free medical, dental, vision, and behavioral health care to low-income Lincoln residents without medical insurance.
Welcomed 6,681 volunteers.
Statistics on Need:
11% of Nebraskans and 8% of Lincoln residents live in poverty.
23% of female-headed households live in poverty.
39% of the guests in our family shelter are under the age of 18.
9.9% of Nebraskans have no health insurance.
70.8% of those without insurance are employed.
In 2009, 1 in 3 people 18-24 years old had no health insurance.
In 2009, 13% of adults in Lancaster County didn’t get medical care because of cost.
